The mountains of Savoie and their world famous resorts, which include some of the biggest ski areas in the world, form the very heart of the French Alps. However, Savoie is not all mountainous, and 70% of the population lives at an altitude of less than 500 meters.

Savoie's exceptional environment brings responsibilities as well as benefits. The development of tourism, agriculture and industry has been carried out with a sensitivity to the environment that respects the goals embodied by Savoie's three parks - the Vanoise National Park (created in 1963) and the Bauges and Chartreuse Regional Parks.

Lake Bourget, the largest natural lake in France, is currently the focus of a major conservation project that has been designed to ensure the sustainable development of the area. Nestled at the foot of the mountains, Lake Bourget is both a popular water sports center and an important part of the area's heritage. Its main historical sites include Hautecombe Abbey, the Priory of Bourget-du-Lac, and the spa town of Aix-les-Bains.
