Mountain industry

Being the premier destination for mountain tourism, Savoie is a formidable terrain for experimentation and innovation for snow and mountain industries. The region is also their premier market with more than 130 M€ invested each year for management of the 60 ski stations in Savoie. Moreover, the important North Alps market is within an arm’s reach.

The largest skiable domain in the world

France counts 1,200 km² of ski trails and 15% of the world’s ski lifts. Savoie represents 43% of the national operating capital, and 40% of the investments in France's mountain areas.

The region counts more than 500 million annual ski passes sold, 56 ski lift operating companies, and generates 70% of the national income in this field.

With 30 million overnight stays, of which 20 are in the winter, Savoie represents 43% of the tourism in the North Alps on its own, and 47% of snow tourism.

Management of the mountains and protection of the environment

The effort of protection and development of the mountains is a two-sided coin. That's why Savoie, along with the University, wishes to reinforce the mountain institute, which develops research programmes on climate changes and sustainable management of the mountainous region, the future of tourism, and the potential risks to the mountains. The activation of the resource centre, launch of new studies and the use of decision tools are indispensable for all the decision makers of the alpine arc, who act on behalf of the local communities and enterprises.
